One of the most charismatic neighborhoods in the city is an excellent temporal, historical and aesthetic connection with the Avenida da Liberdade. There, cosmopolitan and contemporary life unites with historical cultural heritage, elegance and charm. 1 – The Avenue during Worls War II<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the Second World War, Lisbon became a \u201cwaiting room\u201d for thousands of people who were hoping to find a safe haven. Through literature and the accounts left by these refugees, we follow the footsteps lost in the city during this period on a route from Marqu\u00eas do Pombal to Pra\u00e7a dos Restauradores.<\/p>\n

The route begins near the Rotunda or Marqu\u00eas de Pombal Square, close to the location of the Aviz Hotel, at the time one of the most prestigious hotels in the capital. Through the identification of boarding houses, hotels, addresses of various personalities and aid organizations, we reveal the Estado Novo\u2019s reception policy and glimpse the shadow of the various spies who criss-crossed the city.<\/p>\n

2 – Statuary on the Avenue:<\/strong><\/p>\n

A new way of discovering the little stories of Lisboa just walking along the main avenue, Liberdade.
\nIn 1886, Lisbon welcomed the new boulevard named Liberdade by the promotor Rosa Ara\u00fajo. The following years would be characterized by the erection of several statues intended to embellish the avenue and honor writers, poets, musicians, and even politicians. To stroll along the Avenue was once a tradition among the locals. It became the perfect scenery for parades, fairs, and other festivities.
\nOur walking tour will begin in Pra\u00e7a dos Restauradores, overlooking the extension of the Avenue that allowed the city\u2019s expansion. And it will end at the Pombal monument in the famous Rotunda and look back at the Avenue in all its splendor<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
