M\u00e9tiers D’Art The Legend Of The Chinese Zodiac \u2013 Year Of The Horse<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Vacheron Constantin continues to pay tribute to the Chinese culture through the M\u00e9tiers d’Art The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac collection, with the introduction of two 25-piece limited editions dedicated to the Year of the Horse.<\/strong><\/p>\n

An enduring tribute to Chinese culture<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last year, underlining its openness to the world and deep cultural curiosity, Vacheron Constantin initiated a second 12-year cycle of M\u00e9tiers d’Art watches dedicated to the Chinese zodiac. The current cycle, together with the preceding cycle inaugurated in 2012, follows the Maison’s long history of creating timepieces that incorporate expressions of both Western and Eastern astrology.<\/p>\n

The two new models are dedicated to the Horse, the seventh sign of the Chinese zodiac, which will supersede the Snake at Lunar New Year in February With a strong presence in Chinese culture and art since ancient times, the horse has a highly diverse symbolic meaning, encompassing vitality, elegance, loyalty and courage \u2013 and especially auspiciousness and good fortune. According to its archives, Vacheron Constantin sent 33 pairs of watches to Canton in 1846, thus beginning a long and close relationship that included orders from Chinese dignitaries. Often produced and sold in pairs, the watches destined for China were designed to withstand humidity and were magnificently decorated with engravings, enamel and precious stones.<\/p>\n

Over the generations, the Maison has continued to create watches influenced by Chinese culture. Examples from recent years include the M\u00e9tiers d’Art Tribute to Traditional Symbols series, a Traditionelle Tourbillon watch honouring the Qilin and Les Cabinotiers pieces such Memorable Places series. Not forgetting the M\u00e9tiers d’Art The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac series, the second 12-year cycle of which began with the Year of the Snake last year.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1774631761784{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;}”]Technical prowess in honour of deep\u00a0savoir-faire<\/em>\u00a0in the artistic crafts\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The two M\u00e9tiers d’Art The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac \u2013 Year of the Horse watches are powered by the self-winding manufacture Calibre 2460 G4. Illustrating the Maison’s expertise in designing mechanisms dedicated to serving artistic expression, the movement was conceived to create an expansive canvas for the decorative arts, thanks to the absence of conventional hands. Instead, a system of four discs displays the indications in apertures positioned around the periphery of the dial.<\/p>\n

The trailing hours and minutes are positioned on the upper part of the dial, complemented by jumping indications for day of the week and date on the lower part. The movement’s 237 components are contained in a diameter of 31 mm and thickness of 6.05 mm. The self-winding calibre provides a power reserve of 40 hours and the sapphire crystal caseback reveals the open-worked oscillating weight.<\/p>\n

Formed from 22K yellow gold, it incorporates a polished Maltese Cross and is decorated with that complement the Haute Horlogerie finishing on the other movement components. The elegance of the movement architecture and quality of these finishes, which include circular graining (perlage), \u00a0C\u00f4tes de Gen\u00e8ve, hand-bevelled bridges and hand-chamfered jewel sinks is confirmed by the Hallmark of Geneva engraved on one of the bridges.[\/vc_column_text][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”17454,17456″ img_size=”full” css=””][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1774631824186{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;}”]<\/p>\n

A constantly evolving field of artistic expression<\/strong><\/p>\n

Illustrating Vacheron Constantin’s mission to perpetuate the traditional decorative crafts, the dial of The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac \u2013 Year of the Horse watch unites\u00a0grand feu<\/em>\u00a0enamelling, miniature painting and hand-engraving to explore a new aesthetic language. The dial is dominated by the three-dimensional figure of a horse leaping over a large rock and set against a delicately painted enamel background.<\/p>\n

The use of relief engraving for the applied motif creates visual depth and enhances the impression of dynamic movement, while the softly graduated colour of the enamel and finely detailed flora lend a dreamlike quality to the background that contrasts with the strength of the horse.<\/p>\n

The horse and rock are sculpted from 18K white or pink gold by the master engraver to create fine details such as the horse’s mane and tail and enhances the texture and contours with a hand-patinated finish. The colour nuances are further enhanced by enamel miniature painting. In total, the creation of this motif represents three days of meticulous work.<\/p>\n

To create the dial background, two enamelling techniques are used: multi-coloured gradient\u00a0grand feu<\/em>\u00a0enamel which changes from a lighter shade in the centre to slightly darker at the edges, and miniature-painted enamel for the foliage. The colour is applied in layers with a very fine brush and the dial plate is then fired at more than 800\u00b0C \u2013 an operation repeated as many times as necessary to cover the full range of colours in the design and achieve the desired intensity of tone and requiring two weeks of work. As a final detail, the background colours of the indications displayed in the four windows match the enamelled details on the dial.<\/p>\n

The 25-piece edition in the pink gold case is paired with a brown alligator leather strap, and the 25 pieces in platinum are complemented by a blue alligator strap.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
