Theatre Variedades: 100 Years of Memories

Theatre Variedades, one of the cultural icons of Parque Mayer and the city of Lisbon, is celebrating nearly a century of existence.
As it approaches its 100th anniversary, EGEAC – Lisboa Cultura is launching the campaign “Theatre Variedades: 100 Years of Memories”, an open invitation to all who hold memories, objects, or stories connected to this historic venue.

Do you have memories of Theatre Variedades?
If you have at home photographs, old tickets, show programs, costumes, or props from Theatre Variedades, now is the time to share them.
If you’ve experienced this stage from the inside and have stories to tell, your voice can help build the collective memory of this historic theater.

The call is open to everyone and will run until January 31, 2026. The goal is to gather a collection of testimonies, objects, and images to be featured in a centenary commemorative exhibition, scheduled for the same year.

A stage that made history

“For nearly a century, Theatre Variedades was a stage for emotion, satire, laughter, social critique, culture, and moments of pure joy. It was always a popular and democratic theater – accessible, vibrant, open-minded, and attentive. We remember not only the artists who performed here but also how Variedades mirrored life in Lisbon, its concerns, and its hopes,” says Joaquim René, director of Theatre Variedades and Capitólio.

Reopened in October 2024, Variedades returns to the city’s cultural scene with renewed energy, yet remains faithful to its roots. Today, it presents itself as a meeting point between generations and artistic genres, as well as a space for creation and sharing, where tradition and innovation coexist:

“We’re reopening the doors to memory — without nostalgia — and also to experimentation and contemporaneity. Variedades today is a living theater – one that honors its past while looking toward the future of Lisbon’s cultural life.”

Memories can be shared by email at memoriasvariedades@egeac.pt, or in person, by appointment arranged in advance through the same email.

Digital copies (scans or reproductions), loans, or donations of objects are all welcome.
